We are all shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of one of the finest criminal defense lawyers in Ohio, Bill Meeks. Bill was one of those lawyers I would go find when he was trying a case to watch and learn. Twenty years ago, in my 2nd year of practice, he happened to be in a small rural courthouse when I was trying a case. It was one of the very few times I got rattled during a trial and it had nothing to do with a judge or witness. He was an intimidating and very stoic professional.

Bill argued and won Berkemer vs. McCarty in the United States Supreme Court at just 37 years old. The outcome of this case prompted the decision to require police to read Miranda Rights to those taken into custody for misdemeanor traffic offenses. (Retired) Judge Alan Travis argued on behalf of the State of Ohio. To read the transcript or listen to Bill’s argument before the Supreme Court,.
Bill passed away at the age of 67. He was respected and loved by many. Rest in peace.
