A new law signed by Kasich in Ohio is expected to free up more space in prisons and save taxpayer dollars. The law has been coined the “Smart on Crime Law” and it allows inmates to serve time at community centers in lieu of a prison sentence. The new law also allows convicted individuals to participate in rehabilitation programs as a part of their sentencing. Attorney Brad Koffel represented a man who was accused of growing and selling medicinal marijuana who may benefit from this new Smart on Crime Law. Mr. Koffel explained that this new law will give judges more freedom and flexibility to assign people like his client to community service and rehabilitation programs rather than sending them to prison. Mr. Koffel’s client said that this is his first offense, and it will be his last as well.
