A former Lima police officer pled guilty to a lesser charge for causing the death of a motorcyclist last year.
Cody Rollins, represented by Brad Koffel, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and pled guilty to a first-degree misdemeanor charge for his role in the traffic accident on August 2, 2017. He faces non-mandatory penalties of up to a $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail.
According to police, Rollins was driving his car westbound on West Elm Street when he began to make a left turn onto Homestead Drive. The oncoming motorcyclist, Brandon Matos, was headed westbound on West Elm Street and struck Rollins’ vehicle. He was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center and died three days later after being transferred to Cleveland University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In Rollins’ first appearance before Judge David Cheney in Allen County Common Pleas Court, Koffel introduced evidence put together through an independent reconstruction of the traffic incident that showed Matos was traveling at least 100 mph at the time of the crash, and that Rollins was not driving recklessly while making the left turn. Judge Cheney ruled that the evidence was admissible to court, and the state offered a plea deal for Rollins, which he accepted.
