A federal judge from Nebraska ruled that the government is responsible for paying a California woman’s attorney fees in full, amounting to about $39,000. The woman was driving on Interstate 80 in Nebraska when she was pulled over in a traffic stop. Police searched her vehicle and found more than $1 million in cash wrapped in dryer sheets and plastic bags. Police seized the cash because they believed it could be connected to narcotics.
The woman alleged she earned the money legally throughout her career as an exotic dancer. A judge agreed and in July ordered that the government return the $1 million. The woman provided past tax returns and other documentation as evidence to validate her claim that the money was hers rightfully.
